In The Trouble with Medicine’s Metaphors I believe that Dhruv Khullar was trying to put across the military and how they use metaphors but also how doctors for cancer patients also use metaphors to talk to them better. I am not gonna lie I had a hard time reading this article just like the last one so I could stop on or way off. Khullar I think is trying to say that just because you may have a sickness but that shouldn’t stop you or make you feel weak or make you give up and he incorporates metaphors into his text. The first line of his article says “Using military terms like”battle “ and”fighter “ to help patients conceptualize their illness can sometimes harm more than it helps.” But in my opinion I have seen it help a lot of patients. After reading writing prompt 1 I think that metaphors can go both ways with people. Half of people understand them and love them and think they can help with a lot of stuff or there are other people who don’t understand metaphors so they don’t know when to use them or maybe even how to use them. I think it really depends on the person and their mentality when it comes to metaphors. In Geary’s TED Talk a quote that stood out to me is “Metaphor lives a secret life all around us.”. This speaks to me because I say that all the time, metaphors are in marketing companies and social media. Even people around you use them and you just might now realize it. They live a life around us that people don’t see sometimes. A quotes from See Through Words that spoke out to me was “At a conceptual level, life is a journey, and arguments are wars:”. The reason I picked this one is because my uncle used to say something similar to me when I was younger to prepare me for the real world when I got older and know that not everything is what it is going to seem and I have to prepare for that. Finally a quote from The Trouble with Medicine’s Metaphors that spoke to me is “The words we choose to describe illness are powerful.”. The reason I chose this quote is because I couldn’t agree with it more. Words are very powerful in general and when words are put with a sensitive subject like illness makes it even more powerful because illness is a hard thing in life that no one should go through but everyone gets sick in life. Some worse than others and those are the people you have to be careful with your words.

  1. I liked how u analyzed. That was really good, good job. I also had a hard time understanding the test, but I got through it.

  2. In the beginning the text was kind of difficult to understand although I still understood the general idea. I thought you had some strong ideas and supported points that complimented the text and main idea.

  3. I, too, think you did a great job analyzing. I want to encourage you to find some longer quotes to work with in your first draft paper. (Of course, all of them don’t have to be longer–just a few.)
