From reading Erard’s article, the first time I was very confused not going to lie. A lot of the stuff he wrote didn’t make sense to me or I just had no idea what he was talking about. Which when discussing it in class I was not the only one who was confused which made me feel a lot better. My first time reading the article it felt all over the place to me and I really did not know what he was talking about sometimes. Now after reading it a second time and going over it in class I have a much better understanding of what Erard was trying to talk about but also what some of his writing means now. For example when he was talking about metaphors being built up into a house I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about or why he even said that I was so lost. But in class we discussed it and now reading it a second time it makes a lot more sense to me then it did the first time. By putting furniture in a room your building up to something you want and can always change it whenever you want. I also felt when first reading the article Erard was all over the place but now going over it again it senses like it is kinda in order but not the best order. By figuring out the furniture metaphor I noticed new stuff to it and I reacted differently to his claim this time then the first time. No I do not think I read something critically at first. I don’t really think I read like that. I had a lot of words I needed to clear the fog because for some reason I just couldn’t understand at first what he was saying. The first word I really needed clearing the fog was for pseudo mistakes. I now know pseudo mistakes means not actually but having the appearance of; pretended; false or spurious; sham. This word really messed me up at first because I had no idea what it meant. The second word I needed clearing the fog was for psycholinguistic. I now know psycholinguistic means the study of the relationship between language and the cognitive or behavioral characteristics of those who use it. These two clearing the fog moments really helped me because I was really lost when reading the paragraphs they were in and having no idea what they meant. Now that I know what they mean the paragraphs make a lot more sense.

  1. Great. I’m so glad that your second read (plus class conversation) helped the text be more accessible. Keep looking up words that you don’t know. That’s how you grow your vocabulary!
