My first experience watching Geary’s TED Talk I really didn’t understand a lot of what he was saying. I was also confused with some of the stuff he was saying. But now watching it a second time I understand what he was saying and what was going on. My favorite part of his TED Talk is when he talks about how Elvis is the metaphor king and relates his songs to metaphors. I thought it was funny and really smart. Something new I noticed while reading is when he talks about how to understand metaphors better that really helped me understand them more and what to look for to find a metaphor. A new text-to-self connection I made while annotating Geary’s TED Talk is when he says “It’s also a great example of how whenever we deal with anything abstract–ideas, emotions, feelings, concepts, thoughts–we inevitably resort to metaphor. The reason why I found this new connection is that I realize I do that sometimes when I am going through my feelings or problems I think of metaphors sometimes and I didn’t even realize I was doing it. New text-to-world connections is when Geary says “The participants had to identify, as quickly as possible, the literally false sentences. They took longer to reject metaphors as false than they did to reject literally false sentences.” I thought about and in everyday life metaphors are all around us even if we don’t realize it and people don’t want to believe sometimes that they are around all the time. That is what I thought of when reading that section.

  1. First of all, I enjoyed learning more about you in your About Me page. I am so excited about your career goals. My guess is that you’re going to enjoy the future essays that we read in this class. Thank you for pursuing such a worthwhile career! 🙂

I’m glad that your second encounter with the text proved clarifying. It often takes two or more read-throughs to understand a text–especially when that text introduces new ideas/concepts. You picked up on some great quotes, as well. Hold onto them, as you may decide to use them in your first paper.
